Christmas Opening 2014

You will all have received the attachedstatement from the Area Team. For the avoidance of doubt, this is a national NHS England document which the Area Team has no option butto circulate. Unsurprisingly for a NHS England document it contains someinaccuracies and contradictions , and I can reassure all practices that the GPC advice as issued last year, and alsoattached , with a link to the appropriate guidance on the BMA website, remains unchanged.

The Area Team has confirmed that it will continue to operate the same sensible and reasonable stance on this issue that it took following consultation with the LMC last year , although it is mandated by NHS Englandto collect the information stated on the pro forma. Practices which wish to close early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve will be able to do so without fear of contractual action, assuming they act in accordance with the guidance and within the regulations and make appropriate arrangements, whetherthrough subcontracting to an OOH provider, or through other means, to ensure that the reasonable needs of patients are met on the two afternoons in question. They are, of course, both Wednesday afternoons anyway, and a lot of practices historically have their doors closed on those afternoons anyway.
