LETTER TO PHE - Tamiflu for the prophylaxis of influenza in nursing & care homes

Please find below a link to a letter from the GPC to Public Health England, the contents of which are self-explanatory.

Please advise the LMC if you are subject to any future inappropriate demands in respect of this issue; you might also wish to show the letter to anyone who has been given the expectation by PHE that you will be prescribing prophylactic anti-viral therapy.

This advice applies, of course, to all institutions, including schools and special needs establishments, not just nursing and care homes.

I would further advise that the contractual definition of essential services is explicit that these are to be delivered in the manner determined by the practice.A decision on whether anti-virals should be prescribed, whether for treatment or prophylaxis of a high risk patient is down to the GP and not to PHE.
