You will be aware of the new mandatory reporting requirements in respect of female genital mutilation, an issue over which the BMA raised very considerable concerns. Unfortunately the new legislation means that practice co-operation is a requirement and there is a contractual obligation to comply with legislation and have regard to appropriate guidance. Having said that the various complex issues around this subject raise a number of ethical dilemmas and are inevitably raising queries from practices.
Whilst there is a great deal of guidance on the HSCIC website about this available at www.hscic.gov.uk/fgm it is not in then least user- friendly and isn’t particularly helpful in dealing with the types of situations individual GPs might face. I have asked the GPC to produce some practical guidance for the profession as a matter of urgency. In the meantime practices might need to contact their medical defence organisation to seek advice over decision making in individual cases. As always too please do not hesitate to contact the LMC for general advice and guidance.
