Inappropriate rent abatement by NHS England

A number of practices have contacted the LMC because NHS England had commenced wholly inappropriately abating notional rent/rent reimbursement from practices which have historically provided rooms, free of charge, for district nurses, midwives and others to support your provision of GP services. I am delighted to say that following LMC and CCG pressure on this issue NHS England has had to do a U–turn and revised its policy; details are as in the letter attached. Please note that abatement will still be applied for any rooms used by external organisations for purely admin rather than clinical use so if that is the case in your premises then you should charge an appropriate market rent or reconsider your practice’s position in respect of continuing to allow accommodation.

As ever, remember that you may still levy reasonable service charges for external tenants providing clinical support to your patients but if you charge them any rent this would remain subject to abatement by NHS England.
